Project Goals:

There has been a lack of representation of minorities in TV, Film, and games. Our team wanted to create something to help engender the representation of minorities in film and games, by creating a free asset pack (available on itch.io) with a minority main character for creators to use. We created a ready to use asset pack, that is also compatible with motion capture technology.

Software:

Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Illustrator

Adobe Indesign

MAYA 3D software

ZBrush

Substance Painter

Adobe After Effects

Initial Pitch:

Story:

The background story for our asset pack centers around the main character, chasing her evil doppelganger through a distorted mirrored dimension. The story begins with the main character going about her nightly routine in the bathroom. While looking at her reflection in the mirror, her reflection's movements begins to differ from her own. Her reflection/ doppelganger covers her eyes with her hands as she laughs, only to then reveal she has made her disappear. The main character falls back in terror, and screams, only to realize her voice is missing. She carefully looks at the mirror, only to see that her reflection has disappeared. In a moment of terror, panic, and desperation to figure out what is going on, the main character touches the surface of the mirror to further to inspect, only to realize it is a portal to mirrored dimension.

We wanted to increase the representation of underrepresented groups in films and games. We felt the best to encourage film and game makers to use a character that was a part of an underrepresented group, was to make an asset pack that was free and accessible, which included a woman of color.

I was in charge of the character concept art. I was in constant communication with our team 3D character artist, to create a concept that was only pleasing to the eye, but also do-able given our time constraints, and abilities as students. The image on the right is the final design my team and I decided on.

Pre-COVID:

Before the events of COVID-19, our team's initial goal was to make a 1-2 minute movie using 3D animation and graphics alongside motion capture technology to show students the limitless opportunities available in animation when using motion capture. Additionally, we would use this video to market the motion capture facilities at Purdue's Envision center, available for student use. However, due to COVID-19, many of Purdue University's facilities were shut down, to prevent any further spread of the virus. Unfortunately, this also meant our team could no longer use the motion capture facilities, forcing us to redirect the direction of our project.

Post-COVID:

Ultimately, after some research, our team found that there was an underrepresentation of women of color in films and video games. We decided to instead create a free asset pack that features a woman of color. We hoped that in doing so we would help engender more representation of women in color, by providing an a relatively accessible environment and character model of a woman of color available on Itch.io.
